Our hands tell a story about who we are. I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had beautiful hands, but they are one of my most important tools. So you know what? I love them. Not only do they put love into whatever I make, but they hold my loved ones, comfort those who are suffering, make some very creative meals, help me do my job on stage and so much more. So yeah, I’m okay with them not being glamorous. They’re part of what makes me happy and who I am. And I take pretty good care of them with my handmade whipped body butter, balms, serums and cold process soap that I make. They all keep my skin looking younger.

Not sure what I’d do without the use of my hands. I remember that when I had carpal tunnel surgery, I was a mess!! I felt so helpless. Have you thought about how your hands help you lately?

Day 21 of March Meet the Maker is all about favorite companies. I’ll share a few, but there are too many to mention. I appreciate and am grateful for these companies for their support to artists of all kinds.

@pepetools_usa is a go to for my Haymaker saw, Nano Blades, disc cutter and GRS Benchmate.

@riogrande supplies me with unlimited tools and supplies like silver sheet and wire. Far too many to mention.

@halsteadjewelrysupplies has the best prices on CZ’s that I’ve found for forging ahead with learning stone setting in various forms.

@artessentialssb is a local company I try and support as much as I can. Especially for watercolors, watercolor paper, journals, alcohol inks and lots more. They also sell my greeting cards in my own rotating card rack. @chaucersbooks sells my cards as well.

@bulknaturaloils is my go to for soap and skin care products. They have great prices and carry organic products. Shipping is expensive but it’s worth their quality.

@onlinelabels is the company I use for labeling my products.

How do you define success in your life? Is it in t

How do you define success in your life? Is it in the traditional sense of receiving awards, diplomas and the like? Or does it go deeper within you to define what you feel is a success for you personally? For me, it’s the latter. Well, to be fair, it’s both. But these days I see things as more of a personal challenge. I tend to set a goal for myself and try to see it through. That gives me a huge sense of accomplishment. One of these is the CD that we put out. The CD took us quite a while to create, years, in fact, but I didn’t realize all the work that would go into it after it was released. It was another three years of marketing throughout the world to get air time. Every time. The inlaid cuff didn’t take years but it took many many hours. Each stone had to be cut to fit exactly where they need to be placed. And that was after the fabrication of the silver cuff, which was a big challenge itself. I consider these a couple of my personal successes.

Day 19 of March Meet the Maker is Saving Up. A ball vise is on my list of things I’d like to have someday. I’m not sure which one is the most highly recommended, but I’m open to suggestions. It would make engraving and setting a lot easier. Both are processes id like to get better at. At some point, a JoolTool would also be nice to have. It does so many different things from lapidary work to polishing.

Day 18 of March Meet the Maker is Colors. What palettes do I like? I can tell you that I love so many colors, but I tend toward blues (especially turquoise), greens and purples, but they are all on my palette. Some more as accents. Mostly these colors are part of my natural world around me. They make me feel alive. So I just went outside and shot a few photos.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Day 17 of the Meet the

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Day 17 of the Meet the Maker Challenge is Challenging Processes. There’s no shortage of those in my world, but this just happens to be the one I have today. I’m working on my first castellated bezel. Yes, I know they sell gizmos that help with this, but I’m doing this all myself. If the divisions are off a little, it just adds to the overall handmade look. But jeez there’s a lot of filing with a tiny needle file. I’ll let you know how it comes out. I’m envisioning this as a ring.

Have you moved around a lot in your lifetime? I have. Especially when I was younger.

Day 16 of Meet the Maker is places you’ve lived. I had to think a minute on this one. I started out in Oregon. Dundee is now known for their wine, but not back then. Portland was a lot less artsy than it is now. It rained 9 months out of the year and my dad's shoes didn't dry out before he needed to put them on again, so we moved to the south central coast of California, away from all our relatives in Oregon and Washington.

Lompoc is known for its vast fields of flowers. Still is. The Santa Ynez Valley had cattle and race horses back then but now it’s wine central. Santa Barbara is across the mountains from Santa Ynez and is nestled between the ocean and the mountains. It was a lot smaller and had a lot more mom and pop shops back then. It was as beautiful and inspiring then as it is now. Puebla, Mexico was only 3 months and I lived on a pig farm. Back to Santa Barbara for a few years before taking off for San Francisco where I put my ex through law school. Then Washington DC where I got my degree in graphic design and acquired lots of great experience, even at the Smithsonian and working for a museum exhibition design firm. Back to Santa Barbara once more. Grateful every day. I’ve found living in different places has definitely broadened my perspective, but after visiting and living in many different places, Santa Barbara continues to inspire me the most. I think it is evident in my work.

I've always been inspired by Native American culture and symbols. A great uncle in the family (who worked for Disney as an animator and was the voice of Angus McBadger in The Wind and The Willows) turned his attention to exploring and finding many of the Chumash painted caves now known. He wrote a book called Rock Paintings of the Chumash and did some great work at our SB Museum of Natural History. I continue to be inspired by Chumash/Native American art.

Curiosity leads to discovery and learning. This continues to top my priorities for this year. There are so many things I want to learn about, learn to do better and expand my skill set. That and taking the time to breathe, be with family and friends, travel, and clearing things out of my life that don’t serve me anymore.

I too bought this lip balm and love it. It is very soft and luxurious feeling. I kind of go nuts with lip balms as my lips are always dry and I am not a big lipstick person, so this is a wonderful find.
